Rosie Gleave is a London-based artist who grew up in Kent. After a convent education she studied for a BA in Fine Art: Painting at Canterbury Christ Church University, gaining 1st Class Honours, and was subsequently awarded the Sidney Cooper Drawing Prize. She continued studying for an MA in Fine Art at University College for the Creative Arts, Canterbury, gaining the Award for Achievement, and then took a Postgraduate Diploma in the Conservation of Easel Paintings at the Courtauld Institute in London.
Her work is predominately figurative and frequently makes use of repetition to help convey the narrative theme. Much of her inspiration comes from early 20th century paintings and woodcuts, Art Deco and 1930s commercial art, ephemera, spritz-dekor and other decorative processes of the period. Artists and printmakers such as Matisse, Sonia Delaunay, Albert Gleizes, Claude Flight, Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews are amongst those who have influenced her.
The current series of digital prints have each been made from an original hand-made work by Rosie Gleave, individually created by one of two methods: either by traditional linocut or by a process of hand-drawing and hand-cutting stencils then airbrush-applying paint on paper. The prints are executed on archival-quality off-white artist paper which has a subtle texture, and are available for purchase here:
